In this photo taken on April 16, 2011 and released by Capital Animals Welfare Association, dogs rescued by animal lovers are released from their truck at a shelter in Beijing, China.
BEIJING – Traffic was running smoothly on a highway just outside Beijing last Friday – until a man noticed an enormous truck carrying stacks of caged dogs.
Mr. An, an animal rights activist and volunteer at Beijing-based China Small Animal Protection Association, saw the cramped, whimpering dogs and decided to do something. His decision ended up saving the lives of 580 canines, who were on their way to the northeastern city of Changchun, where they were to be slaughtered and eventually served for dinner.
An, who refuses to reveal his full name or profession, swerved his car several times to intercept the truck, forcing it to slow down and stop. He then called a friend for help. The friend published a plea on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like social media platform popular in China, and soon more than 100 animal rights activists had gathered with water, medicine and food for the dogs, who the truck driver later admitted were headed for restaurants in Changchun.
They sprayed water on the truck to cool the dogs down and fed them, while others argued with the truck driver and requested to see his quarantine license, which is required for transporting live animals. One dog gave birth to five puppies through the metal bars of her cage. Many of the dogs were wearing collars or chains, making the volunteers suspicious that they had been stolen from their owners, which the driver denied.
The scuffle attracted the police, who said the animal lovers had no right to stop the truck or traffic. But the dispute over the dogs’ fate continued for another 15 hours. Finally, around 1 a.m., a solution was reached: Two groups there, pet company LeepPet Holding Corp. and animal rights group Shangshan Animal Fund, agreed to buy the dogs from the driver for $17,690.
Most of the dogs are now at the China Small Animal Protection Association, in the western suburbs of Beijing. Many are not in good condition though – a few have already died, and 68 were in Dongxing Animal Hospital Tuesday and being treated for dehydration, various physical injuries and canine distemper, a highly contagious virus.
‘It’s cruel to eat dogs?’
The animal rescue has sparked a debate in China.
Lianyue, a renowned newspaper columnist and an active blogger, said on his Twitter page: “I love dogs, and I don’t eat dogs. But laws do not prohibit other people’s freedom or rights to eat dogs. As a matter of fact, pigs, cows, sheep and all the plants we eat, are all our good friends. It’s repulsive to eat dogs, but it’s more repulsive to force others not to eat them.”
Another Twitterer agreed with his comment: “I actually don’t understand, why can people eat pigs and chickens so openly but it’s cruel to eat dogs?”
Eating dog meat has been a long tradition in China. Ancient Chinese medical books say dog meat keeps the body warm in winter and many Chinese people still believe that. Although dog meat is not seen at dinner tables as much as pork, beef or other kinds of white meat, some parts of China still favor the canine dish – especially in the northeast along the border with Korea and in the southern provinces of Guizhou and Guangdong, which are known for eating practically anything that moves.
Many people view less superior breeds of dogs as edible “meat dogs,” even while having pet dogs themselves. In vast areas of the Chinese countryside, free-roaming dogs are often snatched and slaughtered for food.
Dogs in China also face the chance of being beaten to death in small remote cities where limited public budgets makes local governments unable to provide rabies vaccination. As a result, when there is a rabies outbreak, locals often use what seems to be the simplest method to address the problem: kill all the dogs.
“When talking about animal rights laws, China is behind over 100 countries in the world. This is hard to believe,” said Grace Gabriel, Asia regional director of International Fund for Animal Welfare.

In this photo taken on April 15, 2011 and released by Capital Animals Welfare Association, animal lovers use their cars to block a truck transporting dogs from Henan province to Jilin province as its passes a toll booth near Beijing, China.
Raising alert
Still, attitudes towards animals are changing and the Chinese public is becoming increasingly aware of animal welfare.
China doesn’t have laws against animal cruelty, but animals like pandas or tigers that are threatened by extinction are legally protected.
Animal protection organizations, despite some not having government permits, are being founded and people are more willing than they used to be to join them and discuss them in public.
Celebrities are getting involved in public service messages – for instance, NBA basketball player Yao Ming is featured in advertisements all over the country telling people to stop eating shark fins. And bear farms, which have been used to harvest bile from live bears and sell it as a valuable ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine, have come under increasing scrutiny and do not get licenses from the government anymore.
“Just a few years ago we didn’t even have this concept of animal protection. Now we have such a wide range of attention and support. Overall, I’m not pessimistic about the future,” Gabriel told NBC News.
And Friday’s truck wasn’t the first one chased by animal lovers. Wang Qi from the China Small Animal Protection Association told NBC another van crammed with dogs was found and followed by volunteers just days before Friday’s rescue, but they lost track of it.
When asked about future plans to save dogs, Wang admitted there’s not too much more they can do.
“What we can only do is appeal for the attention from the government and the society, and hope everyone cares about it,” said Wang. “We have to help raise the alert for animal welfare. This is the best we can do.”

Bon appetit, somebody show them a cow?
There will be a time we will be happy to have a dog for dinner :)
Dog isn't a very common food in China.
Then it would only be fair for me to watch the time a dog eats you for a worthless meal.
We eat all and any number of other animals. Why not an animal that is grossly overpopulated instead of rare and endangered?
Those Chinese will eat damn near anything, won't they? Dogs, cats, whatever. They also eat a lot of shark fin soup, killing millions of sharks in the process and messing up the balance of nature in the ocean. The result is our coral reefs are in a state of decline in many area, affecting fish populations.
Shark fins have no nutritional value, are high in mercury content, and have no, or very little taste. Why eat such crap?
Or you =) YUM YUM!
Smooth Operator that is. If it came between you or my rescued amrerican bullys, I guarantee I am choosing you!
While it is true, dog is not a common food in China, nevertheless, I can't seem to get myself to eat it here in China, there is something unsettling about eating Fido. While I will eat most anything else here, this is one of those few things I just can't get past.
One thing I will not do, is tell the Chinese people it is wrong. They are also very respectful of what I chose not to eat, and if dog meat is on the table, they always make sure I know as they know most westerners won't eat it.
I have been visiting Asia for the last 20 years, and now living here for the last 5. I have grown accustomed to a lot of different types of foods here, much of which we, in the west, would never consider, like one of my favorites, fish head soup.
Yet eating Fido, I am sorry people who love dog meat, but I need to draw the line.
I used to see butcher shops in South Korea full of dead dogs being butchered. Cats too. Do they not know the difference between a companion animal and a farm animal? This is just sick.
The difference between pets and farm animals is simply this: at some point someone decided it wasn't ok to eat pets. There is no intrinsic difference that makes cows or pigs slaughter-worthy, but exempts cats or dogs. It seems hypocritical to call them sick for eating animals if you eat animals too.
Sick is it? So you're happy with the millions we euthanize in the US every year? Much better for them than being dinner, don't you agree?
Reason dogs and cats were useful so they were not eaten. Dogs would keep the other animals and you safe through alerting you, while cats would kill the vermin. Nowadays they aren't as useful as they were then; just saying
While I would never eat a dog, I have to agree with mscf. In India they would kill you if you killed a cow yet here a good portion of the population eats them. What animals are considered food is a cultural issue, not a biological one. Just because we see eating dogs and cats as disgusting does not mean that all cultures do. You even have people in this country who keep certain breeds of pigs as pets while others regularly eat them. People need to learn to not be so judgemental.
Although I think all animals should be treated humanely and slaughter should always be performed with the least amount of pain and stress to an animal, I think eating a dog and eating a chicken are quite different. Dogs are keenly intelligent and many recent tests indicate a level of sentience that was heretofore unsuspected. To this day live vivesections are still performed in certain research, which is unconscionable. In a perfect world we would not eat any intelligent animals, but farmed animals such as pigs, cows and chickens have been bred with maximum food capacity in mind.
The pigs are smarter than dogs debate still rages on, but the anatomy of a dog has allowed these animals to work for us--they have protected, served and steadfastly loved us. Sometimes in this life we must adhere to our sensibilities to determine our values, and in the case of eating dogs in any conditions except for the most dire, I can't imagine defending this option.
krazykollegestudent,
So wouldn't it be logical to then assume from your argument that humans that aren't useful are ok to be ea...
Guess we better be real careful how we define the word 'useful'. Otherwise politicians might become an endangered species.
Even if you are ignorant enough to believe that a dog is just like any other animal what about the fact that these dogs had collars and were peoples PETS. They were STEALING these dogs from loving homes. SO HORRIBLE. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of someone stealing an animal I love from me for someone else to EAT.
And animals that are raised to be eaten are usually treated a lot more humanely than these poor animals. They don't starve them slowly or dehydrate them. So sick.
I had a friend years ago who had a pet pig. I never stopped eating pork just because I held this cute little pet pig. There is nothing wrong with raising a pet calf until it is grown & then butchering it or baby rabbits that were a companion or pet and then becoming our meal. What is wrong with eating horses or dogs? We have a lot of wild horses in the SW that would make a good meal for some people and way too many dogs & cats, and butchering them & sending the meat to china would help offset the trade unbalance. We spend way too much on out pet needs and reducing the nation’s pets would help improve the economy. We could use the skins or hides for jackets then. If I had a dog, you could have it for a meal if you are starving to death.
.....love me some fried rabbit.......
I have had the misfortune to travel through China and I can tell you that most of those people will eat anything that once moved, regardless of species or condition. That's just the way it is there. Hint to future China adventurers: if there is any doubt, don't eat it.
I knew a young Chinese professional who had been traumatized by his family killing and eating a dog they had raised from a pup, which he loved. Two decades later, he still hadn't recovered. Eating dogs and horses and other animals that live closely with man and love and work for us just seems so wrong.
Are people leaving comments so foolish that they don't see the treatment of these animals as extremely poor? Food or not, dignity should be a requirement - in the US too. Some dogs would not have lived to be slaughtered on this truck. RIDICULOUS!!!!
I will tell you the BIG difference between farm animals and dogs. Dogs were domesticated to be man's companion. Although I fight for all animals including humane treatment of farm animals, I far put an importance on Fido. For me intelligence of a animal is also a huge factor; therefore I have heart strings for pigs. In any regard, anyone that has had a pet and for me namely a dog that is part of their family, this makes us sick. I consider Mr. An my absolute hero. Dogs only want to please man. They are lost without human interaction and sense of family. The idea that many of htese dogs have collars disgust me. Again, we are humans need to treat all animals better, but certainly our Man's best friends.
I've had dogs all my life. Got one now I wouldn't trade for any human being and if someone stole him I'd be huntin em down. Still aint gonna tell another country with a different culture what they can and can't do.
I saw another news story today that the Iranian government is trying to ban pet dogs.
Poor puppies just can't catch a break!
Sandra, I agree completely. Modern day dogs are man-made. They are completely dependent on man and have been bread to trust and protect man. The idea that someone could kill and eat a dog that comes running with its tail wagging makes me sick.
Jim, we think alike!
My dog greets me at the door everyday and is happy to see me... a chicken isn't going to do that....
I hear dog meat is ruff, ruff to chew.
Not true. Even chickens become attached to humans and bounds that place. It is called love. God's greatest gift to us all.
Jim in Houston, If dogs have been bread why not eat them?
takenaka, if babies have been bred why not eat them?
There is no difference from the slaughter of a dog or cat than the slaughter of a cow, pig, goat, chicken, etc. Every last one of these animals can be domesticated and can (but should not be) also be consumed. There are people who also eat horses and camels. Is there anything wrong with this? If you are a meat eater it's all the same.
I for one think that people should subsist on vegetation but that's my personal belief and I don't knock anyone who feels different.
This is a cultural dietary choice of Asians. And it seems that many western dog lovers have for many years used this to suggest that they are barbaric or uncivilized. The whole debate is another facet of a white supremacist mind set.
Dogs. cats, horses, goats, sheep, pigs what difference does it make?
The only difference is between people's ears. My brother had chickens that used to come when he called them. Sound familiar?
Oh, Mars Mars Mars...White supremacist mind set is the reason that eating dogs in China is considered cruel? You're a troll.
Also, humans were never designed to eat just vegetation. If it weren't for the fact that we ate meat, cooked meat specifically, our brains would have never developed into what we have today. Cooked meat changed everything for the humans. Those of you that have devolved into vegetarians and/or vegans, continue on your quest, be my guest. I would like to continue to grow. On the cooked flesh of other creatures, great and small.
I can not believe people are eating dogs in this day and age. Enough with the Chinese thinking you can kill and eat any animal because their ancient medicine books tell them it helps the liver, sex drive, etc etc. Go ask any normal doctor about eating bear bile, or dog meat and see what they say. I am utterly disgusted!
Uh Misty,
I'm so happy you're so satisfied with us killing cats/dogs by the millions the humane way. Giving them a shot and shooshing them into the fire. Your moral leadership an inspiration to us all. Oh and the drug companies have a special plaque in your name celebrating your morality.
rrobeson, you clearly misread Misty's comment. She was not at all defending eating animals. Read! She clearly states that she is disgusted.
Pamela,
clearly you can't read. Well, or at least read and understand at the same time.
What I was saying that requires an explanation to anybody below 1st grade intelligence is that being disgusted by eating animals (in China) while acknowledging that you know we need to euthanize millions of them 'here in the good old usa' is hypocritical. Us people in the 'modern' world need to adopt a little more reality and more humility than shows in these forums.
rrobeson-
Let's go back to you not being able to read, or rather, to simply stay on topic.
Misty-2982840 made no mention at all of being "satisfied" or not with "us killing cats/dogs by the millions the humane way" so why bring it up?
Please be careful not to attribute comments to people that they clearly did not make. The practice of animal euthanasia (in America, I presume you mean, by your use of "us") is not in any way related to this story, nor did Misty mention it at all in her comment.
I realize it might be exciting to think you have a valid point that the world needs to see, but next time run it past a grown-up before you post.
HOORAY for vegetarians!
Oh please again and again and again to the people that didnt' get past second grade.
Misty said: I can not believe people are eating dogs in this day and age.
That implied a moral argument that we are 'more' civilized and don't eat dogs 'today.' My point was that we kill dogs by the millions and people like Misty are Ok with that 'morality', but we're unhappy with eating them. If Misty threw something away and it didn't get recycled, she'd probably be equally teary-eyed, but to consider eating a dog that was going to be killed anyway is somehow barbaric by today's 'moral' standards. Ok people! Get, I don't expect you to agree to the hypocrisy you live by, but a little shame for your beliefs might be in order when thinking people rub your nose in it!
Get with the plan that God created and you'll be happier. Otherwise, sue God and you'll be on the track you're currently arguing.
Robeson,
You are on the wrong track. I cannot believe that people in today's time eat dogs either. We domesticated dogs to be companions to us humans - You know Man's best friend. I belive anyone that loves animals is also disgusted in the fact that we euthanize so many pets and that is so preventable by neutering and spaying. BUT that is not what the article is talking about. The very fact that these dogs had collars is also unbeleivable. Again thank God for Mr. An!!!!!!!
What I can't believe is how pathetic, ingnorant, and stupid a number of you fools above are. Who gives a sh*t that you "can't believe" people eat dogs "today." If there was a god he'd be laughing at you too, for your stupidity. No one cares that you are horrified or disgusted. I am disgusted by YOUR arrogance and stupidity and basic SUB-SPEICIES HUMAN. Wouldn't eat you though - that would be like eating pure vile filth. I say gas the humans and burn them.
rrobeson - I understood what you said. Gotta remember the basic intelligence level in the US is *maybe* 8 yrs old.
Some day Americans will realize that neither the Chinese government nor the Chinese people are not just like the people who live in your neighborhood. They are not just like your next door neighbor.
Theirs is a society in which it is ok to abandon a girl baby along the road because they would rather have had a boy. If they have an albino baby it is abandoned in a field or given to an orphanage because they would rather not have the embarrassment. Any deformity is handles this way. The lucky albinos are the ones adopted out of the orphanages to American families.
A Vietnamese friend of mine explained it like this: which do you think a Chinese family would rather eat, a dog or a nice beef steak? They can't afford steak and meat is meat. Dogs, crickets and bird nests are not a delicacy, they are food for really hungry people.
Scotties Rule:
You really wrote: "I say gas the humans and burn them." And you have the gall to insult others for arrogance and judge their intelligence simply because you disagree with them? Really?
You also wrote: "I am disgusted by YOUR arrogance and stupidity and basic SUB-SPEICIES HUMAN." I am disgusted by your inability to compose a proper sentence. Other than insult, what in the Sam Hell are you trying to say here? If you are here to insult people's intelligence, I suggest you try harder to display some of your own.
Grump,
You just don't get it. China is not a hungry third world nation anymore. Dog meat like bearr spleen is considered fine dinning and a status food in China. But worst of all this story reinforces old stereotypes about the chinese people. You like the old saw that says, How do you know when a chinese family has moved in the neigborhood? Answere: No more stray dogs.
That is some primo grenade-trolling, Scotties Rule. You're suspended for a week for violating #1 of the Code of Honor. Keep the personal disgust with other commenters to yourself.
Taterwheel, just let it go and comment on something more worthwhile next time.
Do these people have no soul? And for all the philosophers who want to shoot their mouths off about a dog being no different than a cow or a pig...stop being ridiculous. Spend some time with a cow or pig or a chicken. Then spend an hour with a dog. To say there is no separating one species from the other means you have no exposure to reality.
Pigs are smarter than dogs. Cows act like pets if you treat them like pets. And chickens make great pets and tasty eggs. All my chickens act like dogs in a sense. They come running to me when I get home. they like to be pet. and you can teach them to do tricks. You're an ignorant indivdual like the majority of these nut case protesters. Get educated before you say something else stupid.
Dolphins are smarter than any of them and they get killed by the thousands from the nets of fisherman from the fish that we buy every day. All our 'pure' of heart Christians should roast in hell if you believe their rules.
I loved my chicken when I lived with my family in oklahoma. It was very smart and he was my favorite. Then when he was nice and fat we killed him and deep fried him (kidding kidding), but really chickens are cool pets
Gives a bit of a different meaning to the term Hot Dog, doesn't it?
Eric, after milking cows for 4 years I can tell you your cow comments are bizarre. I never encountered a cow as you described or one of your super-chickens. Are you sure that they just didn't seem smart?...I mean to you?
I am not so sure about cows. There are some in a pasture that borders my walking route, and whenever I go by they line up right at the fence and their eyes follow me. I'm serious when I say I feel some kind of attempt on their part to engage eye contact.
I love my cat and have loved my dogs. But "one man's PET is another man's PROTEIN." Judgmental people are so funny.
Renee,
I would not eat your cat but I would kill it if it came in my yard. Is that being judgmental?
Todd well said.
Sheila, in my opinion Todd is just saying there is really no comparison to dogs, (which we breed and domesticated to be man's companion) and that of cows and pigs. Personally I love cows and pigs. I used to take my dogs to go play by a pasture with cows. They seemed to look forward to us. HOWEVER night and day to a dog. My dogs knowso many words I say and picks up on my moods. They always do there best to MAKE me happy. They are loyal and I strongly believe would morn my death. When I moved my house and had to leave my dog in a new place, she cried when I left. It was of fear that her family left. Sorry cows and pigs are great, but they are no dog.
Goats are smarter than dogs but if you want milk something must be done with the young. Ruminants seem like holy beings to me. The thought of eating a cow gives me nightmares. Why not eat God? Dogs and cats would gladly eat your flesh. Cows, goats and sheep would starve first.
I have no words! Comparing domesticated Pets to Pigs and Chickens that were bred from consumption is just dumb.
How about cows? You ever had a hamburger? Well I bet most Hindus would have a few choice words for someone who eats a holy animal that carries a soul based on their religion. This is about social norms pure and simple. Just because they don't match yours does not make them any less valid.
If people want to eat dog, I say it's their choice, not mine. And yes, I do own a dog. I also grew up on a farm and had a pet pig, and yet I still manage to eat bacon. I guess I'm just dumb that way.
Why is it dumb? I've seen some dogs and cats that are dumber than chickens and vice-versa. If you don't have words, perhaps your parents should learn you some!
Have you ever seen the movie Mondo Cane (It's a Dog's World)? A juxtaposed account of how we pamper in America what is meat on the table in other countries. And I think a lot more Americans would be vegetarians if they had to look Bossie in the big brown eyes and slit her throat to have that steak on the grill.
Are dogs yummy or something??
yes. Dog meat is really good.
The black one looks delicious!
I grew-up on a farm, eating the pets was/is normal...
Dogs taste like pork.
Cats taste like chicken.
Somewhere on Earth everything that is not poison is on the menu. Even Puffer fish which are generally believed to be the second–most poisonous vertebrate in the world, are considered a delicacy...
Scott's eat haggis and Aussies eat kangaroo and wombat...
If you have eaten at McDonnels, chances are you have eaten horse...
Given a chance, most animals will eat humans, even pigs and some other humans... Ask Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer...
Uh, AC really?
Haggis should be banned by the UN as a crime against humanity (along with British cooking)! And yes, I'm Scottish.
You're a disgusting puke.
rrobeson,
I'm Scottish also and you are correct on both counts... Haggis is still illegal to import to the USA...
tstorm,
You ever eat veal??? read this - http://www.noveal.org/
I grew up around Phillipinos. They LOVE dog. When you went to one of their parties you never knew (and didn't ask) if what you were being served was pork or dog. COuldn't tell the diff after being marinated, skewered and cooked. It was all good. Lab on a log is REALLY tasty. =)
I say we ban all these morons who feel the need to feel "outraged" by this (and their own ignornace and audacious stupidity) from breeding.
There's no reason in these times to eat any animals. Everything your body needs it can get from the natural proteins which are found in a combination of foods. Grains, legumes, all manners of fruits, herbs and vegetables. In 1969 I had a bad accident and almost died. As I left my body and my life, I had one very powerful feeling. I did not see God as we would think of, or reincarnations of past life as I had been told of, but rather one simple thing, all life was precious. The very fact that we had life, that was the gift. I realized at that time, even in the face of what many doctors contradicted, that one did not need to kill to live. We have a special relationship with the plant kingdom. Plants can be processed, for the most part and still continue their cycle of life. Seeds can be eaten and many are not broken up in the processes and can be passed on. Many large seeds are round and can roll away, or easily be thrown a distance, to only grow and nurture many more. Other seeds cling to our bodies and ride to a new garden. Not all potatoes will be picked from the ground, many will grow and re-seed. When one eats a carrot you start on the small end. The top crown is green and a little bitter. After the sweet sugar of the carrot the bitter is strong so one will drop it and look for another sweet one. A carrot will grown even after being pulled out of the ground, simply by being stepped on and pushed back into the earth, where it can again send down roots and sprout seeds for new generations. Pineapple is planted that why here in Hawaii Nei. Twist a cabbage out of the ground and much of the tap root will remain and it too will sprout stocks of seeds to be carried in the winds. Again and again you will find examples like these in Nature's Kingdom. There is no reason to take life, except for selfish reasons. Within these plants one can find medications, as well as foods for growth. Rice, soy. My daughter was born in 1975. She has two very healthy children. My daughter has never been given a single drop of meat in her life. She usually will not eat eggs, unless they are cooked in some bread. So there is no reason to take the lives of the other creatures we share this planet with. Help other life to live, that is the noble thing to do. Do as these big hearted people did. Save a life. Make God smile, maybe cry a tear of joy, within that place is love, and true peace. Bless all life.
Dear Scotties Rule,
I am a Scot and I had to try haggis just to say I had done so. It wasn't so terribly bad but I would rather have had a steak.
I've also eaten dog stew at a local Native American pueblo during a festival and I felt guilty. I've wondered many times why I felt so guilty. I guess, under different circumstances, I could have gotten a great deal of love and loyalty from that dog. Dogs are part of who we are as humans and we probably could have progressed as quickly as we did without the wolves helping us out.
any of you people ever tried Tripe?
gloria,
Tripe is popular here in New Mexico. It is most nasty and I do not eat it. I don't like the way it smells and I don't like the texture. Many folks do like it though and will go miles out of their way to get a good bowl of tripe with red or green chili.
At least it is part of a cow and not a dog.
I do eat 'rocky mountain oysters', though.
gloria fabiaschi,
The Thai's love it, I found it was a little too chewy, so when I find some in a stew or salad, I just pass it to the wife... They like chitterlings also, personally I do like the taste and avoid all dishes containing it...
I remember Mom becoming upset when ants would invaded our pic-nicks. In Asia, they are just considered another part of the menu... The black/brown dots in the rice, just add crunch and extra zing to the flavor... The large ant eggs are a special treat... The elder ladies and children will use long poles with a net on the end, to knock the ant nest out of the trees during the wet season..
Have you ever eaten chicken feet? These are eaten on special occasions for 'Good Luck' during the New Year.
When you live on a farm, almost nothing from a; pig, chicken, or other animal is thrown away/wasted...
grump in NM,
Rocky Mountain Oysters ? We call it Prairie Oysters here. Lightly floured, lightly fried. Yum... I wish we can get it more often, not just spring.
I see people talk about the people that eat the dogs but I would like to say I am proud of the people that are standing up for the animals them selves. It has to start somewhere and I hope these people keep trying to help them.
How about someone in the Obama administration ( the Ambassador possibly) tells the Chinese that this is a sick and disgusting practice that they must stop if they wish to be viewed as a modern society.
Yep, us pure of hearts only kill dophins (highest intelligence in the ocean), deer, pigs (equal to dog intelligence by the way), cows, birds, etc.
Christians are a wonder. To sin sinlessly but hold others to the fire of our disdain must be a wonderful thing. I guess that's why the early Christians had those wonderful revelations from God that 'animals' didn't have souls, so it's ok to eat them. Humans however were the 'only' species to have souls so it's not ok to kill them. Sophistry at it's finest.
Now in 'modern' times we're much more enlightened. We've learned that animals we like (two and four legged) should be protected. Animals we don't like (two and four legged) are ok to be killed.
rrobeson, is is not the fault of the faithful for what they do. They just want something to focus their zealous nature on. I for one believe in Nietzsche!
I have seen videos on how they kill animals....They TORTURE them before they kill them and often they are not even dead when they skin them! They have no regard for living beings. But I do applaud those brave souls that are trying to change things over there, keep up the good work!
Oh.... rrobeson- aren't you just a wonderful person, justifying your disdain for any "Christian" who doesn't like the Chinese eating dogs......your so above everyone on this thread and a legend in your own mind, putz!
And what of the religions that feel eating cows or pigs is wrong? Does your bible say it is a sin to eat dogs?
Enjoy your barbecued poodle, Takenaka! Yummy!
Didn't you just tell them ? Why do you need Obama to put his blessing on your statement ? You are just not good enough ?
I am so happy that that man had the guts to stop the driver!!! God bless he saved all those poor dogs!!!
Saved them for what? Death by injection?
I don't want to eat dogs. I just find it a bit undisireable myself. BUT Please, Stop trying to be the judge and jurry. It's not the way we were raised. And it's none of our business to put our nose in the traditions of these other cultures. What seems to be so horrible to you is the way of life for them as they know it. We stop them and they starve. So now your creating genocide by making them starve. I don't believe in abortion, but I won't tell you that it should be against the law for you to have the freedom of choice. People do things others don't agree with every day. If you don't like it, don't be apart of it. Oh, did you forget Europeans eat horse meat and make Pattes' out of human placentas after a child is born. I'd rather eat a dog.
Bon Apetite.Barbaric and Disgusting!
That's relativistic--if it's okay with their culture, who are we to judge? But there are things in every culture (including US culture, such as it is) that are horrific and yes, we need to judge in order to put a stop to what is wrong. We particularly need to judge ourselves, but wrong is just wrong.
You're right, we were raised to shoot then ask questions.
Don't talk about genocide when its just a word you found in a book.
You are an idiot if you think that any country has gotten far by walking on eggshells.
With change, there is always the idiot who gets their toes stepped on.
It use to be socially acceptable to sell children.
Eric:
Your parents must have beat the intelligence out of you...
You misspelled irresponsible.
As for your comments on the Chinese activists:
People should be able to eat what they need if they are starving, but not go out of their way just to get other people's lost, stolen, and or tortured pets as a delicacy.
There are countries that do not have laws reguarding cannibalism.
Please buy yourself a one-way ticket.
Mortified...I shouldn't be laughing....but incredibly well put and quick to the point...kudos :)
Mortified I'm not sure about your parents but...reguarding?????
You cannot forget "wipping" ...er whippings
My Vietnamese auto-repair shop owner got mad at his German Shepard, so he killed it, butchered it and barbecued it. His 12 year old daughter told me.
chinese eat dogs i remember article back in 2006 what happen back then was that china had few cases of rabies and what did they do they slaughtered 50k dogs and most of kills was based on bats and govenment police go to each home telling home owners kill their dogs. This communist govenment in china is subhuman and this who obama continues to borrow trillions from i swear to god if china owns american then they better not come down my neighborhood and knock on my door and say kill your dog or lose your house i will kill them first. Take notice to any chinese people living in american who want nothing to do with any other race except their own in american go back to china if u not going to intergrate into american society right or leave im so tired of certain races comming to america to live but want nothing to do with any race but their own and if attack on our country happens they be gone in heart beat. Leeches
Another example of bad behaviour to animals was when they retired horses from the US military. Thousands of horses were put down (I don't know exact number someone do the reasearch). So don't be biased in your word choice.
I couldn't agree with you more
David, I believe your racism is showing a bit. Wonder why a Chinese person (or any other person, for that matter) would want to have nothing to do with you? Amazing how you know all about how and why Chinese people (or others from other countries) act and why they should "integrate" into "our" society.
I agree breaking US laws shouldn't be allowed (and most places wouldn't smile upon eating dogs since it is considered cruelty, although humans seem to be unwilling to simply fix their pets so they don't have to be put to sleep), but I would bet you tend to hang with "your kind of people who obviously aren't from anywhere else unless they speak wonderful English and don't want to even think about what their culture was like before they came to a country where they didn't speak the language or understand why people did things" . Oh wait..this country belongs to you so that is okay...hmm.
There are many Chinese Americans who don't only hang with each other and who contribute greatly to this country, and really who said they had to speak to you anyway? They aren't going to eat your dog I assure you, but I really can see why you might perceive them as ignoring you. I know I would if you talked like that about me and I am from here. Sure it is great if someone learns English and "integrates" enough to be happy and successful, but really Chinese people (or any other group) have the right to meet where food they like is served and their native language is spoken just as you do. Remember, this is America...and they have rights just as you do whether you like it or not.
Several summers ago in New Bern, NC a Asia family was charged with 'animal cruelty'. They had invited their neighbor over for a special treat. Their family pet had been killed by a passing car and they decided to honor its passing with a party. The main course of the meal was the dog, which was a accepted meat in their former culture. The neighbor called the POLICE.
The Judge dropped the cruelty charges, because the death was a ACCIDENT. The Judge did require the family to attend a Social Awareness class, even though there were no NC Laws concerning 'Eating Domestic Animals'.
IMO - The neighbor should have also been required to attend. I'm sure, these people will never invite that neighbor over for another meal...
The story is notably not finished yet. Are these dogs going to die (e.g. by being euthanized) or what? In America, we're much more civilized. We kill our dogs and cats by the millions and just say 'nothing'. But of course, using them for food would be wrong. Killing them is necessary. Making it useful is cruel and inhuman.
Just because you or your family secretly go out and kill whole families of dogs and cats to subdue your psychosis doesn not mean everyone else in the USA does.
I wish someone would euthanize people like you. Or at the minimum castrate them.
No moritified it is HUMANS like you that need to be enuthanized. PTS your whole family tree. You are the trouble with the sub-species called humans. The stupidity that is bred into the human sub-species is INCREDIBLE. Know why your kind have so many mental deformities?? because you've overbred and overpopulated. Time to PTS the whole lot of you
Just about like ninteenth century Americans killing millions of bison for their skins - most of the meat just rotted on the plains. Almost exterminated them.
I love dogs; that's why I don't eat meat any longer. Farm animals are just as sentient as dogs. Dogs are bred by man to have a special bond with people; but farm animals have the same emotional and intelligent capacity as dogs.
That is the fundamental philosophical argument of civilization. However, it never addresses the absolute function established by nature(God) long before man existed that animals eat animals and that overpopulation must be controlled by murder or natural calamity.
We have to kill them....or else they'll die. Classic South Park Joke. (Insert laugh here).
I'm on the fence with this argument. I've owned 2 mini pot belly pigs as pets and they were amazing. Very affectionate and smart. However hypocritical it may seem, I did not stop eating pork. For me, it is not the end result, (people eating animals), it is the process. I am deeply disturbed with what goes on in industrial slaughter houses.
I think what we choose to eat is dictated by culture and should be respected as such. However, when animals are suffering unnecessarily in order for us to pick out a juicy steak at Safeway, it makes me think twice. What struck me about this article was the Jenga-like picture of the truck itself with the dogs. That is cruel and ridiculous. To each culture their own as far as consumption, but please, stand up for an animal's right to be properly, mercifully killed so that you can enjoy your dinner.
So, rrobeson, what's stopping you from being a cannibal? If you aren't already, of course. Humans are just another type of animal, and we're eaten by other animals quite often. The next logical step to solve overpopulation & lack of food sources on earth would be to look to your neighbor for sustenance, eh? Does anyone have problems with this?
I don't see why not if you enjoy eating human meat and don't suffer any consequences.
Gross!
Totally disgusting!! Also disgusted with the French eating horses. Not only do the Chinese slaughter the dogs for food consumption, but sell their furs for all of of our fine U.S. patrons that enjoy wearing fur coats. Next time you're at the Kennedy Center and see the fine ladies sporting their furs, just ask them what type of dog they are wearing...
As far as Chinese Resturants in the U.S., would not be surprised if some of the establishments serve dog as well. If your dog goes missing, check the local Chinese diner.
Exactly how is the French eating horsemeat different then us eating cow or buffalo meat?
well you see here in America we have laws against serving dog meat. If any of the food investigations found out a Chinese restaurant was serving dog meat they would be shut down.
Actually, does anybody know what laws exist that prevent serving dog meat? I know horse meat is legal here.
Disgusting eating those dogs i don't give a shi t what freaking country you live in. to add insult to injury what bunch of stupid idiot freak heads would eat a sick animal or any dog for that matter.
good for these people it shows China has people with brains and compassion.that's more than i can say for their whacko government DOG EATING SHOULD BE OUTLAWED, IDIOTS.
I agree with you
Thank You Ohio!
They eat to live. Unlike us, they don't have a grocery store near by nor can they have their food delivered via internet. Leave them alone. Read and educate yourself and you will understand.
eat to live then grow a garden!Sorry pal that's a lame excuse.
Gloria, I think you're wasting your time on Eric. If this were an article on dog fighting both Eric-3090957 and rrobeson would find some reason to be pro-dog fight. It would no doubt be something insightful like "it's a cultural tradition that we have no right to judge". The typical hack BS.
i'm shocked that so many people commenting on this story are actually in favor of this chinese guy. i was rolling my eyes for most of the article thinking about how silly it is to save dogs that will die within weeks or months anyway. i new some people would agree with the guy, but i figured most americans would share my same feelings, but that hasn't really happened. easting dog is weird... in america. many dogs in china are livestock... they feed people. this particular story shows mistreatment and possibly theft, so that's no good. but if they were farmed like chickens and fed to the masses, i would think little of it. i am a dog owner and i think most dogs are cute and fun, but they are animals and they can feed the world just like any other crawling thing. i'm just upset that that guy caused a safety hazard for all the other drivers that he distracted/ impeded.
Just so you know--chinese people won't eat dogs for sustenance. The vast majority of the country is not so poor anymore, come on. Not to mention, these dogs were likely procured at a high cost--you'd have to pay the drivers, pay the people who took/farmed the dogs, and dogs are not a very cost-effective food source (tertiary+predators).
i know i am Todd, and Tyler is shocked he's a dog owner. holy crap Tyler don't eat your own dog just because they can feed the world just like any othew crawling thing.
Bottom line Tyler yours is just another lame ass excuse. oh and by the way those dogs were not farmed like chickens to feed the masses, and even if they were they still shouldn't be eaten, or farmed as a matter of fact. they were peoples pets.tough crap if your upset because this guy caused a safety hazard, hell he should of caused a riot. he has BRAINS, a hell of lot more than some people got, know what i mean Tyler?.I AM SOOOOOOOOO GLAD THEY RESCUED THEM! BRAVISMO
Don't eat vegetables either. They have feelings too!
and more intelligence than some of our posters here.
OHHH, rrobeson. I think you have seriously missed the bus here. I love how you can insult the intelligence of others, yet I am pretty sure my two border collies are smarter than you, by a lot. And definitely more compassionate.
It is not so much the issue of eating dogs or horses. It is the issue of the slaughter. While the slaughter houses here in the us could be argued as cruel, the cow or pig is killed in a fairly humane way, a bolt gun shot to the head. Did you know that the Chinese think torturing the dog before they kill it will give the meat some kind of special powers that enhance the eaters sexual prowless? Did you know that horse slaughter houses in Mexico stab the horse in the spine with a knife and then hang them up and cut them up alive!
I suggest you look at yourself before you make the assumption that someone else is ignorant or stupid. Not to mention everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even a deplorable human being such as yourself.
Love my dogs (and my horses and cats!), and would definitely rather have their company than yours, and absolutely would not let you eat them even if you were starving to death. Karma is a b*$!D#
a dog looks into your eyes to read your emotion's, cows ,chickens, and even pigs just stand there waiting to be fed. a dog even will recognize the sound of your car engine when you come home and will be at the door to greet you. china needs to conform thier medicinal beliefs before every animal on every continient is gone.
Have you owned a pig as a pet? Because I can categorically say that your assessment is incorrect. I love my dogs, they are great pets. But I also had 2 pot belly pigs growing up that we treated like pets. They had beds downstairs, they used litter boxes, and were fastidiously clean. They were incredibly affectionate and made different types of sounds depending on their mood. One of them made a little sound only for my dad, it was the sweetest thing. We bathed them regularly, they loved their baths, and generally just roamed the house and backyard as our pets. They got along with the dogs just fine and it was very fun for the time we had the "menagerie."
So while I understand your point, make sure you know the facts behind what you are saying. In other words...don't knock it until you try it!!
They also learned "tricks," like sit and lay down. One of them also figured out how to open our sliding class door, which was very heavy. She also learned how to unlock the back door by jimmying it with her nose, none of our dogs ever figured that one out...very smart.
And for the record, I still eat pork and did while we owned our pets. Call me a hypocrite...it's all good. "Bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good!" (Pulp Fiction quote)
Numerous scientific studies have shown that cows and pigs are amongst the most emotionally developed animals.
@keepitamerican, geese can differentiatethe sound of the family car too. Not arguing, just saying. There are a lot of animals with way more intelligence than we give them credit for.
No one should judge until you've sampled Orange Pekingnese. Ummm ummm!
What the hell is wrong with these people! Are they completely uncivilized? Thank God for the kind souls in this country who have the common sense, decency, and courage to step up and intervene. It sickens me to think of the countless animals meeting this cruel and inhumane fate everyday. Ghandi said it best....you can best judge a society based on the way they treat their animals. Amen to that!
Intervene as in kill them via injection and shoosh them into the fire. Yes, clearly Christians should be proud sending them to the inferno. Oh and Ghandi was referring to cows. Had a hamburger lately Delaney18?
Separate your bleeding hearts from understanding of cultures.
Don't try bringing reason into this, nobody will pay you any mind!
I find it interesting that we, as Americans, feel the unstoppable need to impose our cultural beliefs, morality and ethics on every other country in the world. Why do we NOT find it repugnant that animals are birthed, raised and systematically slaughtered for our meals, but if another nation happens to perform the same process, using different animals, it is all of the sudden the scourge of the world!? Really? There is nothing better to concern ourselves with than a small region of some other country consuming a protein source that we disagree with?
+1 Different cultures are a beautiful thing no matter what.
Pith,
Yes infinity diversity in infinite combinations is a beautiful thing. Uh, but it also happens to be the formal definition of Chaos!
Nope.avi
They have NO anti cruelty laws...that is barbaric. Here, we have humane regulations in place for the slaughter or euthanasia of animals. Civilized "cultures" don't find it acceptable to beat animals to death.
Do the research dude. Step inside an industrial slaughter house in middle America and tell me how humane you find it.
Yes. The way we treat pigs and chickens is particulary appalling, but you hear little outcry in this country. Everyone just wants cheap meat and eggs. Remember that footage of cows with broken legs being driven into the slaughterhouse because they are worth more if they arrive under their own power? The Chinese are simply abusing a different species.
god you are naive and mentally impaired. 750 million Muslim women are treated no better; can be sodomized at age 1 by Qur'an
stoned to death etc. and your concernces are with dogs. How did u get so screwed up?
A couple points here....I am a licensed psychologist, a researcher, the Vice President of a no kil Humane Society, and a long time rescuer and animal activist. I am well aware and lobby against our slaughter practices in the US as many other people do. The point is that in this country, we care enough to have cruelty laws and fight against inhumane practices. A country that has absolutely no regulations against animal cruelty and where it is common practice to beat an animal to death is barbaric. You are concerned with slaughterhouse practices, but you are okay with what goes on in China? That makes no sense. What do you personally do to fight for animals in slaughterhouses or being abused in other ways? I have dedicated my life to it. Mr. Michael, as a psychologist I can assure you that you are the one that could benefit from a mental status exam considering your ludicrous point that one has to choose if they care about animals or people. I live in NY and work with the most abused and neglected children in the state that are destined for death and/or prison without effective intervention. In my lifetime, the amount of lives (both animals and human) that I have been able to save and change is countless. What have you done to help Muslim women or anyone else for that matter and how did you become so narrow minded? Animals and human beings have a lot in common. They are both living, breathing, feeling beings with thoughts, emotions, relationships, etc. They both deserve people to stand up for them when being abused. Maybe you should spend more of your energy educating yourself and making a difference in the world than criticizing those who are.
@Delaney28, thank you for all you do to help children and animals in America. Having said that, you need to remember this is America. Not China. We have a culture and they have a culture. We can no more impose our cultural beliefs on them any more than they can impose theirs on us.
We eat pigs. Jews do not. Can they look at us in horror? Can they say we are barbaric?
We eat cows. Hindu's do not. Do they have the right to go around talking bad about our society? Can they go on tv and say Americans need psychological help?
What I'm saying is do not let your self-righteousness get in the way of another persons right to live as they choose in their home country. If the come here, no eating of dogs. If you go to India, don't bring any beef. Live and let live. Its not our place to tell them how to live or what to eat. Just because our government thinks they are The Police to the World doesn't mean they are. Just like you, and many like you, can not be the moral guide to China's consumption practices.
It is nice to read about people like Mr. An that care about all life. Empathy is important for the survival of our species. and people will not go hungry if they stop eating cat or dog.
I also wonder if eating a dog with distemper is bad for you.
I think that, it all depends on intelligence. We call and a dog comes to us, the cow stares.... chewing it's cud.
"Stupid #@K! Let's eat it!"
I always thought this was only a joke people had about the Chinese. They do actually eat dogs!?!?!
While the practice of eating dog meat is repulsive to most Americans, many of our country's euthanized dogs and cats from animal shelters wind up heading to a rendering plant. What's a rendering plant? It's where all the farm animal carcasses go to be par-boiled, fats and solids separated, and used to make things like. . .oh, dog and cat food, ANIMAL FEED, glycerin for your beauty creams and medical ointments, and bone meal which you sprinkle on your garden. Oh, but don't worry. . .it's all been properly sanitized. At least we don't eat OUR dogs.
People do not realize where their beloved pets go when the Vet says we will take care of your pet. Straight to the rendering plant. This is one reason out pets are getting cancers and have so many health issues. We at ocDoggieDinners know the problems with commercial food that contains MEAT BY-PRODUCUTS and that is the reason we do what we do at www.ocdoggiedinners.com
